I bet most of that junk mail was comprised of sales letters (though we really didn’t care, we were just excited to have our own mail!). You know-those one or two page letters trying to sell us something by using bold text, all caps, and most of the time, black, white and red color schemes. For everything from car repairs to hair restoration, those sales letters would come by the droves.

It wasn’t until I began creating sales letters for my own business, and then creating them for clients, that I realized how important those letters were for the business who sent them. As a direct way to present and sell something to potential customers all over the country, sales letters have played an important role in business marketing for years. The good news is that sales letters have evolved. No longer resembling ‘paper telemarketing’, a properly written and designed sales letter can do wonders for driving sales for your small business.

Small product businesses in particular can greatly benefit from a well-written sales letter. Why? Because small businesses usually don’t use sales letters and this in itself presents an untapped market. How many sales letters have you received from jewelry companies, bath & body companies, baby product sellers, etc? Likely, not many if any at all. Most small businesses focus on online and email marketing to drive sales and build brand awareness. While effective and smart, online marketing is only one piece of the marketing puzzle. Sales letters open up an entirely new avenue for driving new and existing companies to make a purchase. And, it adds to your brand awareness, too.

If sales letters are so great, why don’t more small businesses use them? Cost plays an important factor, as having a professional letter written isn’t cheap. And, many small product businesses might not know the value this type of marketing tool can bring. Additionally, trying to create your own sales letter can be daunting if you’re not a writer at heart, and can be just ‘one more thing’ to do.

Let’s take a look at the value a sales letter can bring. A past client utilized a sales letter to promote a new line of children’s apparel to an audience of 2,500 households which contained a child under the age of 5 (she obtained a mailing list from a reputable broker). This client had yet to claim a profit on her business, had one employee and was in her third year of business (not your typical business to utilize sales letters). She had a targeted sales letter created that fit her product, short-term sales and brand-awareness goals.

After mailing, this client had grossed approximately $5,000 in sales from new and returning customers who received the letter- which more than recovered her initial cost of having the letter created and the price of the mailing list. She will send the same letter to a different group of potential clients, and hopes to see profits again.

Creating a sales letter for your small business should be a well-thought out process. Consider why you should consider using one:

• Your past customers present an excellent starting point for repeat sales from your sales letter.

• A well-written sales letter can be used more than once, hence paying for itself over and over.

• Recipients of your sales letter are likely to be more open to something new and fresh, and not the same old sales letters that come from car companies, home repair venues and weight-loss products. Give them something fun and fresh!

• Mothers are a powerful demographic. Small product-based companies NEED to tap into the ‘mommy market’ to drive sales. A sales letter is a potent way to do this.

• Beauty products, health & beauty services, female-targeted products and family oriented products & services tend to market well through sales letters.

• There are not many small businesses (or home based businesses) using sales letters as a marketing tool. This opens up the very wide avenue for smart small businesses to grab onto.

• Sales letters are a prime way to present new goods and services, provide a small product sample or promotion and best of all, JUMP start holiday sales (now is the time, people!)

• Even if you currently use email and online marketing, print sales letters should not be overlooked. A visually appealing piece of mail is a powerful sales tool and only helps reinforce your brand.

Ok, so let’s say your interest is peaked and you want to learn more about creating a sales letter for your product or service. First, take a peek at this sales letter example to see how it is written to target a certain audience, and how it can persuade a reader to take more interest in the product-and hopefully make a sale. Then, consider these things when creating a letter for your business:

• Who your intended audience is and how you will get their contact information.

• Your goals, or the end-result, you are after with the sales letter. What do you hope to achieve?

• The cost effectiveness of creating and sending a sales letter. Even if your budget is tiny, you can still tap into this marketing effort.

• How you will monitor results of sending your sales letter. Will you offer a promotion or coupon code to be traced from sales against the letter?

Your sales letter should have a clear purpose and enough information to drive your reader to take action, hence, make a purchase. Keep it simple, make it visual and use your business identity to build brand awareness and trust.

Best of all, offer an incentive like a coupon or discount code, business magnet or small product sample. The client mentioned above who sent out a sales letter for her clothing line included two small fabric swatches with each letter, so readers could see the amazing beauty of the fabrics she used in her line. Most of all, recognize your sales letter as the long-term investment in your business that it is, use it wisely, and enjoy to the return!
___________________________________________________________________________________

~Lisa Otto is a professional freelance copywriter who has created marketing materials for several up-and-coming businesses, with impressive results. Built in two-story A-frame construction, with towering floor to ceiling peaked windows, winding staircases that crease through steep hillsides to the lakes below, or crafted to blend into the very trees that surround their massive expanse, these homes represent more than beauty by design. They represent a luxury market you may be missing. If you’ve never heard the term ‘Northwoods’, chances are you don’t live in the Midwest where this very influential market resides. If so, you’re missing out on a really big consumer marketing opportunity.

As you can imagine, the homes described above cost several hundred thousand to several million dollars to construct and own. They represent more than just a luxury get-a-way or retreat (for many, homes like these are summer residences). This Northwoods lifestyle is just that, a lifestyle…a measure of wealth, success and status. These homes represent their owners on a highly prestigious level. What it means for you is that this market has money to spend, and if properly targeted, they can spend it on you.

What is the Northwoods market?

Wisconsin, Minnesota, the UP of Michigan and Canada all boast claim to some of the deepest Northwoods expanses in the US. Here, miles upon miles of woodland exist, some mingled with lakes that offer prime grounds for creating a luxury Northwoods retreat. Luxury homes and exclusive seasonal community groups can be found here. People of wealth flock from the larger cities to build or purchase homes in the Northwoods, including physicians, bankers, realtors, professional athletes, entrepreneurs, celebrities, investors and others. Because many Northwoods home owners are seasonal, the bulk of commerce they provide occurs from April-September, sometimes into December for areas that offer winter activities later in the year. Due to this seasonal boom in population and spending that occur in communities where many luxury Northwoods homes reside, gifts shops, stores and shopping centers in those areas adjust inventory to accommodate. This can include offering basic everyday items, along with boutique quality products as well.

Why should you consider this market?

This is a luxury market with money to spend and the affinity to do so. Consumers in this market are influenced by having nice things, luxury things, what their neighbors have (true!), and what is new and trendy. While most income earners in this market are men, women tend to be the main spenders, along with tweens and teenagers.

Gift shops are common in Northwoods areas which often carry an eclectic range of merchandise and who are not afraid to carry higher-priced items. Boutique goods like organic and handmade lotions, soaps and body products, jewelry, boutique clothing, indie books and music DVD’s, country and Northwoods themed home décor, pottery, glass, outdoor items, gourmet food products, and upscale children’s clothing and accessories are common in stores like these. Many retailers make local wholesale purchases if they can find a local seller of quality, or source via trips to trade shows throughout the year. Ultimately, with the wide selection of uncommon and high-quality goods often found in Northwoods shops and stores, anyone with a product that fits, even with a higher wholesale price tag, should investigate if this market works for them.

How do you tap into this market?

Believe it or not in this economy, many gift shops and stores in Northwoods areas have been in business for many years, showing a longevity supported by the wealth boom in seasonal population. To find them, you need to know the areas where they set up shop. You can start by using Google to research shops in the states mentioned earlier. Then, contact them to see if they are accepting new products, then make your pitch. Or, ask followers of your social networks who may live in these areas to provide you with some leads for shops to pitch. Because many of these retailers are seasonal, make your pitch at an appropriate buying time (mid-winter-late spring), or provide a fast turn-around time to meet rapid wholesale purchases if possible.

As a lucky girl who grew up in a lake home in the deep Northwoods, I can appreciate the excitement of taking a boat ride around the lake, just before dusk, to ‘sight-see’ all the beautiful Northwoods lake homes. Even better, was the fun of spending hours browsing the gift stores and shops in the community where we lived. Every season, merchandise became more exciting, fresher and more wonderful. There was always something uncommon and always something original. Why not make it your product that stands out and entices this deep-pocketed market to make a purchase?

To get help promoting your product to the Northwoods market, consider Boutique Up! This is where heads butt and everyone has a different opinion. In the end, you'll need to decide what type of packaging works best for what you hope to accomplish. Here's why...

You've likely heard other business owners chatting about how expensive it was to create their press kit packaging, or how they hired a graphic designer to create custom folders, letterheads, etc for their press kits. You may have even seen examples of very artistic press kit packaging or those with embellishments and lots of flair.

Once you have all your pieces written, you'll need to package them in an orderly, attractive way. This is where some people run into their largest expense in the entire press kit creation process. As mentioned in part one, media and retailers are often overwhelmed with press kit submissions, and one rule of thought is to make press kit packaging colorful, unique and even decorative in order to grab attention (and be pulled up out of the slush-pile, as it were).

Does it work? Maybe. For some. However, having worked with, read blog posts by and chatted with reporters and business owner who receive press kits on a daily basis, the consensus seems to be that 'pretty' and 'expensive looking' does not guarantee you a lifeline out of the slush pile.

Instead, most reporters and others will say that a nice folder, embellished with an attractive business label, and filled with attractive, well written and well placed press kit components, (and maybe even a little treat or product sample) is preferred. Yes, be creative and add your own flair, but also remember that spending a lot on design does not guarantee anything. Ultimately, your persistence and willingness to follow up on each press kit sent will help determine your success!

So, the general rule of thumb is:

Assemble your press kit in an attractive pocket folder or folder of your choice. Feel free to use a nice colored folder, especially one coordinated with your business label and logo. You can print your press kit on glossy paper, professional weight paper, or any type that you see fit.

Having professionally printed business labels with your company name and logo is fine

Be sure all of your press kit components are printed on your company letterhead (many times, your copywriter will be able to create this for you).

Keep your press kit packaging simple.

Feel free to add a little treat (candy is good), or a small product sample or promotional item if appropriate (like a business pen with your name on it). Treats can actually be helpful!

In the end, there is not a clearly defined need to spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on your press kit packaging.

So, if the recipient might just throw your press kit in the 'slush pile', how do you get noticed? The answer to this question is PERSISTENCE.

Keep a calendar at your desk specifically for the purpose of marking when you sent a press kit out and to whom you sent it. Then, be sure to follow up in a few days to a week to be sure your recipient received it. A phone call is best, but if you want to work your way up to a phone call by emailing first, that's OK too. You may not receive an answer, but continue your follow up process until you do!

Alternately, you can assemble your entire press kit electronically, saving the need to physically send them out all of the time. How? The simplest way is to have your writer save your press kit documents in a PDF file and then host the file on your website or press page. You can then send the link to the press kit page (or even the PDF files) directly via email to your recipient. Each business should consider having their press kit hosted electronically as this is becoming the preferred method to receiving press kits. And, you still do need to follow up after sending an electronic kit, just as you would if you sent a paper one.

OK, Examples of press kits for you to see:

Elaborate, nicely decorated kit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/prixprix/sets/72157604457132575/

Bright, colorful kit: http://www.sophieandspice.com/kitphoto1.jpg

A simple, pretty electronic press kit: http://www.2houndsdesign.com/skin1/presspacket/about2HoundsDesign.pdf

Adjust your kit to your budget and taste, and don't forget to get help if you need it! And, it seems this time of year seems to generally jump-start interest in hitting promotions hard, and a common question comes up over and over again: "What is a press kit and how do I make one?"

A press kit comes in many forms and can be called different things; media kit, or pitch kit, and has many purposes. A press kit can be used to generate media interest in your product or business, and is useful in pitching your product for garnering wholesale/retail interest. I also know of artists who have used a press kit to gain entrance to exclusive craft and art shows, and also when pitching artistic pieces to galleries and museums for exhibition.

If you're trying to gain some business exposure and/or sell more product at wholesale, a press kit really is a must. So, what components make up a complete kit? Well, this can vary a bit based on what you are selling or what your business speciality is. But, some main components remain the same:

A company biography

A cover letter introducing yourself or your business. Also called a 'pitch letter'.

A current press release

A profile of business services offered or a line sheet (sell sheet) of products you are promoting

Additionally, some businesses may choose to include the following when pitching the media:

A question & answer sheet for interview purposes

A fact sheet about your business or product

A head shot of you or your CEO, whoever is the 'voice' of the company and acting as the representative to be contacted on your company's behalf.

Each piece plays it's own role in presenting your business.

Cover Sheet: This is often your initial point of contact; your pitch to gain a reader's attention and make them want to know more about your business.

Company/Personal Bio: This tells the history of your company, or your own story as related to your business. A bio not only displays how the company started, the inspiration behind it and often the timeline of your business creation, but it can weave a very interesting and personal story of how and why this business or product was created.

Press Release: A current press release acts as the current announcement as related to your business and provides current information which can be used by your reader. For instance; say you have a recent press release announcing the launch of your company. This will provide the reader immediate information about your business and what you do. This is helpful, especially for the media, because it gives them something to work from.

Line Sheet or Services Profile: Basically, this is a sheet that outlines what product(s) you are selling, specifics about the product(s), and pricing as related to your reader. For a service-based business, creating a services profile outlines exactly what your business does.

Fact Sheet: A fact sheet provides a very quick look at targeted information about your product or business. This is a great tool for highlighting very specific selling points about what you are offering.

Question & Answer Sheet: A Q&A sheet provides a guide for media persons to follow during a potential interview.

Creating a press kit isn't something you should tackle yourself if you are not comfortable writing, or just don't welcome the thought of having to create professional content about your own business. Because the media and wholesale markets are often flooded with press kit inquiries, you want to be sure your content and presentation are as professional as possible. This does not mean that you can't step out of the box and place a very unique spin on your press kit, or give it a funky, original tone. You want your kit to be a representation of you, your business and personal or branding style. However, no matter what you do, be sure the end result is always professional, easy to read, well written and highly presentable.

Asking a professional, like Creative Writing Studios, to create your press kit is a best bet if you're not willing or able to do it yourself.

PART TWO will discuss how to package your press kit, how to create an electronic press kit and what the heck to do with it once it's done.

You Can Win: Free Content Marketing Service

Did you know that Boutique Up! offers writing services, like press releases, press kits, content marketing and blogging?

No? Well, that's about to change. Recently my husband lost his job, 100% due to the failed economy. His profession, interior and decorative carpentry, is not in high demand as you can imagine, so the outlook for him to find another job anytime soon is slim.

In light of this, I've taken on not only a full-time job, but a very part time one, too, as well as running both BUD and Creative Writing Studios. Busy is now very much an understatement in relation to my life. All this sudden mayhem has made me take a step back from all that I do and seek out what's working, and what's not.

This has been a blessing. Now that time is a commodity more than it has ever been in my life, taking stock of what's working in business and what is not has been a true eye-opener. Continuing with things that don't work, but are still a part of my business solely as 'time suckers', is just....dumb. Yet these things have been so much a part of my daily business that I either just let it slide or found reasons to keep them included.

Having 12 email accounts is one of these things that just ain't workin'. Offering services in which the time commitment does not equate a profitable return on my time investment is another. Finding reasons to do everything myself is yet another.

Trimming the fat, as it were, may not save me or my businesses in the long run. But don't you think that trimming the unhealthy and making room for new growth and long-term business health is worth a try? As I evaluate my business plan, decide where to make changes while still offering valuable, cost-effective services, I think it is.

The moral of this story is: don't wait until you have to take stock in your business to do it. Look at it now and see what you can do to keep yourself afloat in these changing times. Going with what doesn't work is a sure way to add stress to stress, and even flat line the road ahead of you. Slow sales, increase in competition, new regulations, impossible credit lines....it is affecting everyone. How we choose to deal with it makes the difference.

For me, I'm going to keep looking ahead and do what I can to support those who use BUD and Creative Writing Studios. While both businesses may be leaner and able to do a touch less, if we stay afloat with the ability to generate growth with the re-blossoming of the economy, than I've done a better job than I'd hoped.

In the meantime, I'll do what I have to to ensure my family has what they need, just like you will, too. Then we can all meet on the other side together and compare damages....and successes.

~Lisa

Yep, You're a Role Model (to someone, belive it or not)

Next week I get to do something I love the most; I get to go speak to 65 third graders about being an EMT. I love the look in their eyes when I bring in all my equipment and start passing it around, while explaining that "this is the tube we put in a person's throat when they can't breathe', and 'this is the cool machine that zaps you with electricity and tells your heart to behave' and all sorts of other things to pique their young minds. But most of all, I love to invite questions from all those shiny little people. And ask, they do; 'Have you ever seen a dead person?', 'has anyone thrown up on you?' and my favorite, 'Do you really get to drive the ambulance?"

Now, fame (yes, fame. Let me live in my moment) as a local EMT, and as a person in uniform who gets to play with lights and loud sirens, has it's responsibilities. I can't be seen in town with my shirt un-tucked, and I can't drive too fast or some child will tell their mother he saw the EMT lady speeding. The benefits of having to be an upstanding member of civil service is great, however, because I get the awesome job of lighting the fire of community service and goodwill in the hearts of lots of little people (and big people, too), and to me, that is the best benefit of doing my job.

Being a helper who is there for others doesn't just stop with my day job. It is also something I enjoy very much as a business owner, too. When I first started Creative Writing Studios, I had role models who I looked up to, whose blogs I would stalk, and on whose every word I would hang. Why? Because I admired them and what they had accomplished with their businesses. And once I admitted to a few of these individuals that I was a fan of their work, they suddenly became the helpers...helpers to me.

It was people like this, the real life helpers, who shaped how I decided to do business and helped me learn valuable information about what I was trying to accomplish, and how to get there. Diana Ennen from Virtual Word Publishing was (and still is) one of those people. Successful, driven, well known in her field as an expert and a go-getter, Diana took one look at me and made it her duty to take me under her wing. Had she not been a willing role model for me in those early months, I would likely still be doing things backwards.

Chances are, there is a shiny person out there who could use help from you. Maybe they have questions about how to run their business, where to find supplies, or want to ask your advice about something. Though you may often think that questions like this only come from those who are trying to 'steal' your business and be your competitor, that's not likely the case.

Diana and I, in essence, are competitors in some areas. But I still think of her as my role model and I would still seek any advice that she is willing to give. As well, if I can help someone else to get where I have been, or make their journey smoother, I will.

Just think of those bright shiny eyes sizing up all my fun EMT stuff...the eagerness, the hope, the
fire in their belly to get to be like me for one day (or at least just drive the darn ambulance).

What set of bright shiny eyes can you help today? Chances are, more than you even know.

Baby Janes Product Review

We really enjoyed reviewing beautiful hair accessories by Baby Janes. You’ll hear convincing arguments from both sides of the fence: those who have had great success with increased sales and business visibility after having a product reviewed, and those who have seen no viable return on the investment of their product at all. However, as with everything, the true value in a product review is just that, the value you place on it.

Value is determined by the worth people place in something. Product review blogs can bring value to your business in a couple of different ways. As we know, they provide immediate and long term exposure to your product. They provide an additional channel for product marketing. They provide visibility in places you may not have reached on your own (or thought about reaching), which can be beneficial. Does this always mean sales? No. You may not even see a measurable increase in traffic to your site. So, without a guarantee of sales or increase in traffic, what value can we place on product review blogs that will be of any worth?

It goes without saying that your best option is to choose product review blogs that have a loyal readership, good traffic numbers, a blog which is active, up-to-date and well taken care of. Additionally, you’ll want to choose review blogs where readers typically leave active comments to product posts. Not only do you increase your chance of promising exposure, you also stand to gather an extremely valuable marketing tool that you’ve likely over looked: Consumer opinion about your product.

Yes, those little comments that people leave at the end of your product review. Those little lines of ‘I love it’ or ‘I hate it’ can add immense value to your business. Consider how much money and time some businesses spend on market research, consumer opinion, consumer satisfaction, etc. Of course you want to know what people think about your product; what they like, what they don’t. Ultimately, you’re not the only one who wants to know what consumers think- retailers who are considering carrying your product on inventory, press and media, potential investors and even buyers want to know too.

Consider incorporating your product review comments into your media or press kit as a way of showing consumer confidence and approval in your product. Not only does this provide a tidbit of ‘good vibes’ about your product, it shows potential consumer demand in a very tight marketplace. As retailers cut back on inventory purchases and focus on products that provide consumer benefit, and a high possibility of sales, adding consumer approval to what you’re selling will only make it more valuable.

Of course, take any negative comments into personal consideration for improving what you’re doing. Then, take the positives and compile a summary of glowing consumer opinions to incorporate into your press kit. You can simply create a brief listing of the places in which you have been reviewed (the more clout the blog has, the better) with a compilation of positive comments and summary of how these comments reflect on your product.

As product sellers dig deeper to find leverage for their products, and the retail market looks harder for products that will sell in a boot-strapped economy, painting a positive picture is essential. If you’re planning on submitting your product to be reviewed anyway, don’t forget to gather up those hot little comments and make them useful. You never know where one nice word might take you!

Congrats to Boca Beth!

A big congrats to Boca Beth for winning a free placement in the BUD Kid's Catalog. ~woot~

Wait...you don't know Boca Beth? Its only the coolest bilingual program for kids on the face of the planet. My kids play with Boca the puppet constantly, all the while singing and dancing to their Boca Beth CD's. Did I mention this keeps them entertained long enough that I can actually get something done??

And its pretty cool that they can chat with the native Spanish speaking kids in their school...so, watch for Boca Beth in the upcoming catalog, to be posted to the BUD website in April!

Its free. I thought perhaps the CPSIA legislation or end of the year tax planning might be to blame. But, after some thought, it became apparent that this behavior is likely just random acts of "phooey-tude" (because this is a PG rated site, I just made that up to curb the other made-up term I was prepared to use) that some people may naturally posses as part of their personality.

Let me tell you what I'm talking about.

In the past two weeks several fellow business women and myself have encountered some rather nasty "phooey-tude". If you're a Twitter user, you've probably noticed the many tweets about others who have had "phooey-tude" dished up at them as well.

1) An online friend and inventor launched her amazing, brand-new to the market product, only to recieve an email from someone who is already blantantly knocking-off her design, and likes to email and tell my friend all about it in a totally grade school 'nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-na' manner. Copyright? Trademark? Well, that's another story.

2) A company I work for is being badmouthed by a similar company, who is using near-slanderous jibber-jabber to try and lure clients over to themselves. (Ever heard of getting clients ethically?)

3) A product developer I know was approached by a magazine editor who ripped her product apart, without any regard for the developer's feelings, and then announced the magazine would be running DIY instructions on how to make the same product, without any acknowledgement to the developer for her design. (The mag claims they thought of the idea before the developer had hers trademarked)

4) A service provider is threatned by a client who promises to smear her name all over the web if the provider doesn't meet the client's demands.

5) Another service provider is told by a client that she (the provider) doesn't deserve to be paid nearly $1,000 for services provided to the client because the client really doesn't need the work after all. (Even though they signed a contract and will now be taken to court). If the provider decides to take the client to court, the client had threatned to be sure the provider "never works in the industry again." Yes, slander, I know....but STILL!!

6) A graphic designer friend is chastisted by a client who stated the designer has 'no business having children if you're going to run a successful business." A statement made after the designer turned down the client's work request because the deadline fell on the designer's due-date!

Ok, so these are just some of the examples that I've come into contact with recently. And I want to know, "What the hell is the matter with people?" Of course all of these examples could have been resolved gracefully, I'm sure. And people are doing and threatning to do things that could potentially lead to legal action. The point is, why is this trend in nastiness escalating in the first place?

As a service provider I've run into my share of snags. As we all know, running a business is hard and things happen. Am I going to make everyone happy all of the time? Nope. Do I make mistakes? Yep. Do I feel bad about it when I screw up? You bet...I'm the type to lose sleep over it (OK, now you all know my secret). Would I ever be condescending, rude, beligerant or outright nasty to anyone? No and no and no!

So here is my question to you, business owners- How will facilitating 'phooey-tude' as part of your everyday personality get you what you want? Don't you think, in the end, it will only ruin YOUR reputation more than that of the person you are being nasty to?

Grace, humility and the ability to agree to disagree are key. My friend Cindy from Streamside Farm likes to recommend the book "The Power of Nice". I'm joining her and recommending it, too.

Maybe, a dose of 'nice' will help us all the next time we feel the 'phooey-tude' creeping in.

~Lisa

The Boutique Up! Ms. Katz describes a writer' platform as:

"Your platform communicates your expertise to others and it works all the time so you don’t have to. Your platform includes your Web presence, any public speaking you do, the classes you teach, the media contacts you’ve established, the articles you’ve published, and any other means you currently have for making your name and your future books known to a viable readership. A platform isn’t what you once did. It’s what you currently do. If others already recognize your expertise on a given topic or for a specific audience or both, then that is your platform. A platform-strong writer is a writer with influence."

Essentially, your 'platform' is the public image, expertise, and business practices you become known for. As for writers, having a clearly defined and well promoted platform can prove invaluable to small business owners, as well. Creating a platform incorporates your personal image, your business principles and the unique characteristics your business brings to the marketplace and consumer.

Cultivating a platform goes beyond visual branding-learn how by reading this really valuable interview. Though intended for writers, I think any business owner can take away some great little pearls for better marketing in the new year......

BUD Knows Press Releases

It is a new year! Do You?

BUD has quite a basket of lofty goals for 2009, and I'm glad to say we've are close to reaching some of them. Our mission is, and has always been, to help product sellers gather the tools, information and resources they need to connect with retailers on a wholesale/dropshipping level. And, I think we've had a pretty good start in 2008.

Because we want to just-provide more, inform more, educate more and support more, we've made a nice little list of the things we hope to accomplish, for you!

1) Open our e-learning Boutique that offers ebooks, eclasses and teleseminars on business topics to help you be a savvy, self-sufficient business owner ( and product promoter!)

2) Continually expand our wholesale directory.

3) Implement a small business resources directory, along with discounts and savings, on business essentials that you'll find useful.

4) Attend a trade show to promote BUD. We have tentative plans to attend the ABC Kids Expo in 2009!

5) Implement our state-by-state retailer directory (more to come on this soon).

6) Increase retailer awareness of BUD and how we can be a great resource for any shop looking for inventory.

7) We have a very unique, untapped marketing plan in the works that looks extremely promising for helping product sellers market their goods. If successful, this will provide product marketing longevity and positioning to a female audience like you've never imagined! (peaked your interest, didn't I?)

8) Increase our monthly interviews and articles to keep you educated and informed about many things retail, marketing and business related.

Whew! We thrive on gossip, digging up dirt on folks, scrounging around other people's personal lives and just plain knowing as much as we can about someone else. Hence, the popularity of celebrity gossip blogs and your local hair salon. However, as much fun as it might be to learn the scoop about someone else, it doesn't mean you have to air your own dirty laundry when creating an effective About Me or About Us page. But, you can make your About Me page interesting enough that your reader's nosey side feels smugly satisfied when finished reading it.

Typically, a website's About Us page is frequently visited. Giving enough information to make your customer comfortable enough to make a purchase is essential. People want to feel safe, secure, and garner a sense of fellowship which enables them to trust you. After all, customers don't usually give a sale to someone they don't trust (think sleazy car salesman).

The basic point of creating an About Us page is to let potential customers or clients learn more about you. As we all know, the internet is great for shopping, but is severely lacking when it comes to learning who you are doing business with. As an online business owner, you can't physically greet every customer who comes through your store, so you must reach out to them through the personable words on your About Us page.

Remember 6 key points that visitors are likely to want to know:

*Your name: Giving your first name is allowing people to get to know you on a personal level.

*Your location: Everyone wants to know where you are located. If your location is exotic or has something exciting to offer, don't be afraid to talk about it! (Maybe you live on the beach where a movie was filmed, or the local restaurant has the BEST burgers in the country...).

*Your Family: Have a spouse? Kids? Pets? Yeah, people want to know about that, too.

*How and why you started your business: Customers are always interested in how your business came to be. Maybe you were inspired to start a store after having a baby, or Grandpa Joe left you a small inheritance so you took the plunge into entrepreneurism. Whatever made you start your business-whatever your story is-let us know about it.

*Your professional background: Do you bring a professional background to your business? Maybe this is a complete career change for you. Either way, give us the goods on where you've been and how you got here.

*Add a picture: Believe it or not, your mug can make you 'real' to your customers. So put on your best smile and say cheese!

The best part is that you can include as much or as little information as you are comfortable . It’s the question more and more small and micro-business owners are faced with in this tight economy, especially when trying to compete with other business in the same genre, and the same position. I’ve been approached by a handful of colleagues in the past month asking for advice on whether or not to close up shop or just keep trying. And while I wish I had a magical answer to make the decision easier for my fellow moms-in-business, I have noticed some common elements which need to be addressed before anyone even considers closing a business.

No matter how you started your business; be it on a whim without a business plan, or carefully thought out with an executive plan, several factors come into play with each business that helps predict future success and longevity. Small business owners sometimes feel like these factors are incidental, or that they don’t have the power or ability to take them fully to heart. But, if you’re considering closing your business, you should.

Common factor #1 is that many people still believe if they build a website, people will flock to it no matter what.

Knowing that it typically takes 3 years for a business to start making money, I see many moms who want to throw in the towel after only 9 months to a year! I recently received and email from a woman who was frustrated and wanting to quit her business after 6 months of no sales. She had a fully stocked website, a great supply of inventory, a mother-in-law who was willing to help her fill orders and create new inventory, and had made an effort to advertise her business through link exchanges. She had only been in business 7 months.

Why did she want to quit so soon? She hadn’t received any sales from her website and needed to start paying on the credit card she charged business expenses to. Her perception of her business is that her site was great and products were great, however no one was buying so she was a failure. Frankly, she wasn’t giving her business a chance or herself enough credit.

After chatting, we decided she would revamp her business focus. She already had a great support system in place with a relative willing to help with inventory, she was prepared for sales with a good inventory stock and an attractive, well designed website. Her focus shifted to driving sales through online advertising, much of it free through blogging, creating content articles, link exchanges, etc, and also on starting a direct email campaign to customers who had purchased from her at craft fairs. TO bring in money and take some financial pressure off, she agreed to watch a neighbors child three times a week. She also faced the reality that she may not make money in her first year-however knew with a good advertising plan, she would be making sales by her second year in business.

Common factor #2 is many business owners think financial pressure means they are failures.

Anyone who jumps into business without a financial back-up plan is likely setting herself up for some rough financial times. Even if you have the best new product to hit the market in a decade, there should still be a source of revenue coming in until the business is making money.
An online friend emailed to say that she was thinking about closing her business after only 2 years in operation. Despite the fact that her business had yet to show a decent profit ( you know, one you can actually support a family from), her husband had quit his job to become a partner in the business. While a good move in the sense that his help and dedication to the business could help with marketing and growth efforts, it likely wasn’t a good decision from a financial aspect. Now having fallen behind in both business and personal debts from the lack of steady income, both my online bud and her husband had to take part time jobs to bring in more money.

Is it a bad thing to have a second job while running your own business? Absolutely not! Feeling a financial pinch doesn’t mean you or your business are failures! It simply means you need money to keep going. Whenever possible, keep a second stream of income coming into your household to keep your financial mind a little more at peace. I won’t be shy in admitting that I’m still working a part time job in addition to my business so I know, every month, money will come from one source or another.

Common factor #3 is a target market that won’t buy what you’re offering.

They are sneaky, hard to find and elusive. Your target market-you know, the ones with money to spend on your product-can seem like they are always out of reach. Anytime you have a product, especially when economic times are lean-it is beneficial to figure out all of your potential customers, not just those whom you think will want what you are offering.

I recently read a blog post by a woman who thought her business was on it’s last legs because her target market, parents, had stopped spending money on her product. Because her product was a “want” and not a “necessity”, she determined parents were just cutting back on spending, therefore resulting in lower sales for her. She received a plethora of helpful responses, many pointing out that she was missing a crucial target market: teachers and educators. By retargeting some marketing efforts to hit this group of potential customers, the business had another opportunity for sales.

Say you create hand crochet socks and your primary market has been new parents? You’ve noticed less people purchasing your socks as baby gifts and sales are down. Why not refocus some effort to promote your socks to parents of premature babies (keep their tiny toes warm), or gift basket designers for inclusion in baby gift baskets? Someone else needs what you have, and while they may not be the target group you started with, expansion may be the beneficial boost you need to make sales and survive in the long term.

If closing your business is crossing your mind, give yourself the opportunity to think of all the options which can help resolve the issues you are having. Maybe its money, or lack of sales, or lack of time which is causing too much stress. How can you work these things out to benefit you? If, however, closing down your business makes the most sense to you and puts your heart at ease, perhaps it is the best avenue. Deciding to close a business doesn’t mean you’ve had a personal or professional failure: it means you are strong enough to know when to bow out gracefully and do what is best for you.

Write A Press Release that People Can Use

What you may not know about press releases could be stealing perfect media opportunities from you. Most small business owners know what a press release is, but they may not know all the ways in which they can be used. Especially, when it comes to writing about something useful for the media, like a press release that offers tips and advice about something newsworthy.

A ‘tips’ press release is one which offers advice on a topic that media, either local or national, will find appealing and useful. For instance, if you own a bridal shop, you can write a press release on the top ten wedding dress designs for 2008. A baby store could give tips on the 5 hottest clothing trends for baby boys for fall. You can create a ‘tips’ press release on any topic in which you are knowledgeable. By doing a bit of online research and paying close attention to you own industry-as well as current events-you should be able to come up with a topic that is relevant and interesting.

Recently, I came across a press release that offered tips on approaching your boss about telecommuting, which the writer tied into current events by mentioning how skyrocketing gas prices are affecting people who commute to work. Not only did the press release offer tips readers could use, she made it newsworthy by tying it into a topic that is plastered all over the media.

Once you’ve created your ‘tips’ press release, send it to your local newspapers, television and radio media. Many times, smaller media venues have space to fill and your press release could fit the bill. If going national, be sure your press release fits in with the editorial calendar of the media you are contacting: namely magazines or large newspapers. If writing about summer dresses, for instance, make sure the media you are sending to is still covering summer topics. Next, send your press release to the online wire, via either PR Web, or free press release submission sites. And don’t forget to place a copy of your press release on your own site, and include it in your next newsletter for an extra marketing boost!

What Retailers Want When You Pitch

In October 2008, we had the pleasure of speaking with several retailers from across the US about what they like and don't like about being pitched. The majority of those interviewed are online retailers, with a handful of on-site retailers in the group.

In a nugget, here is what our retailers said about being pitched:

What they like:

A seller who is prepared to pitch their product: including having a completed line sheet, high quality product photos and pricing already in place

A seller who has researched the business they are pitching. What items does the store currently carry, what are their pitching requirements, etc?

A seller who knows his/her pricing terms inside and out, has set wholesale pricing and/or dropshipping terms, and is realistic about price points and retail margins!

A seller who is confident! Our interviewees said they were more inclined to take a chance on a seller who exuded confidence and passion, than timidness and discomfort.

A seller who follows-up after making their pitch, frequently if needed. (and you thought you were bugging them too much!) Three retailers stated they are simply too busy to remember to follow-up with every seller-even those they are interested in.

What they DIDN'T like:

A seller who isn't confident.

Sellers who have unrealistic pricing, leaving unworkable margins for the retailer. All of our interviewees stated that many "small" and "home-based" product manufacturers overprice their products right out of the retail market.

Sellers who are unorganized about product presentation, sending information or following up with retail inquiries.

A seller who isn't in-tune with his/her competition. Every seller must be prepared to tell why their product should be chosen over competing products.

A little insight as we head into the new year. Watch for a full article to come out on this topic in January!

BUD 2009 Wholesale Catalog

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; Just knowing that I might, maybe, kind of sorta have to be in charge and take control of an accident scene or complicated medical problem was something I just didn't feel prepared for. Though I was competent in my skills and delivered kind, effective care to my patients, I did all I could to stay in the background and make sure my partner was the one to run the show.

Then one muggy afternoon in August two years into my EMT career, I found myself at an accident scene involving a wedding party. They had just left the church after taking their vows, their wedding party following behind them as they all proceeded to a local banquet hall for the reception. A quarter mile away from the church, however, the bride and groom were struck by a teenager in a full sized Dodge Ram who had run a stop sign. The domino affect took place with 3 cars involved and 8 patients injured, the groom severely.

As we raced the ambulance to the scene, all I could think about was-nothing. My mind was blank, adrenaline running through me, making me primed and ready to respond. I had all the necessary equipment out and ready to go, my trauma bag over my shoulder as I sat in the back, bumping and bouncing down the road into the unknown. Suddenly, I was jumping out of the ambulance and into mayhem-patients screaming and strewn all over in the ditches and nearby field, First Responders running out to help, passers-by stopping to gawk. Without warning, I was handed a clipboard by my partner. “Go triage and let me know who you want where.” My lips went painfully numb. What? I turned around but my partner was gone. The moments that ensued were blinding, yet driven into my brain with a powerful message I carry with me everyday.

Before I knew it, I had assessed every patient and assigned teams to them, ordered two helicopters, helped direct assisting ambulances, helped moved a patient with a life-threatening shattered pelvis, inserted several IV's and in the blink of an eye, was transporting the very last patient out of the muddy field and on her way to the hospital. All with nobody, yet everybody, standing over me to help guide my decisions. Instead of me asking the questions, I was giving the directions and I had done it effectively and to the best of my ability.

I played that day over and over in my mind for months. Had everything gone according to plan? No. Were there glitches and little mess-ups in the midst of chaos? Sure. Did I find myself static and standing still while everyone else moved around me? No. When my main work was done, I jumped in to the next logical task and completed it. This was forward momentum, and it meant our patients were treated and cared for effectively-our main goal.

While in business, as with any high-stress endeavor, being the leader may not be the optimum position you want to fill. However, I've learned that since I'm the boss, and this is my company, while I may have others to lean over me now and then to listen, I'm the only one who can drive the forward momentum needed to accomplish core goals. I've started thinking of my business as the life I need to save everyday. When one task is done, I move on to the next, regardless of little mix-ups and side steps that may lead me off track.

If you're hiding, waiting for someone else to give you direction, you might want to take a peek in the mirror and release your own inner EMT. You know what to do and how to do it, and if you just listen to yourself, you just might find the way.

~Lisa

Want Your Product on the Cover of the BUD Valentine's Catalog?

This is it! Your big chance! A huge chance, a fun chance, the best chance of all....to get YOUR product added to the front cover of the BUD Valentine's Wholesale Catalog.

Yep, I want your best product picture there for the world-and 800+ retailers-to see. Don't you?

How do you win such an awesome thing, you ask? Simple. Help spread the word about BUD.

Get to posting about BUD and our Valentine's Catalog everywhere you go (don't spam, but work us into the conversation). Then, come back to this thread and post a link to where you wrote about us! Just save in PDF and send. Better yet, keep it on your site and let buyers download on demand. Don't know where to have a line sheet made? Talk to you graphic designer-or your friend's graphic designer-and they can help you.

3) Packaging and displays: How will you package your product so that it is convenient for store owners to display on their shelves? Does it hang, need to be folded, come in a box, etc? However you package, if you are selling to others, you must consider their needs.

4) Samples: Do you have samples available for retailers to view? If so, have you considered how many you can afford to part with over several weeks or months of pitching? Have you factored in the cost of shipping samples to your bottom line?

5) Purchase Orders: Ah, the purchase order-your golden ticket to selling product. Your purchase order should have clearly spelled out terms for minimum order requirements, quantities, bulk discounts, tax and shipping costs, and terms. Of course you can customize your PO to fit your business.

6) Your Pitch: Well, now that you have the basis covered, its time to see if your verbal or email pitch is up to speed. Have you written down what you're going to say and then practiced it out loud a few hundred times? When you pick up that phone and make your first cold call...what are you going to say? When you open your email and create that pitch email...have you made sure it sounds concise, compelling and engaging?

OK, time to gather your 'pitching gear' and get going! ~Happy pitching!~

Lisa
